OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — The University of Tulsa pitcher Emily Watson has been named one of 30 student-athletes across the nation who excel both on and off the field as a candidate for the 2018 Senior CLASS Award, it was announced on Thursday.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists later in the season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.

The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2018 Women's College World Series.

A team captain this season, Watson ranks in the program's all-time top 10 in several categories, including ERA (2nd, 1.80), opposing batting average (2nd, .207), strikeouts (2nd, 684), shutouts (t-2nd, 25), wins (3rd, 58), games started (5th, 85), complete-games (6th, 54), saves (6th, 4), innings pitched (8th, 534.0) and appearances (8th, 102). This season she is 8-4 with a 2.13 ERA and 87 strikeouts in 75.2 innings pitched.

Off the diamond, she is on track to graduate in May 2018 with a business management degree. She has been named to the dean's list five times and the Athletic Director's Honor Roll six times, as well as a three-time American Athletic Conference All-Academic honoree.
