TULSA, Okla. — Fifth-year head men's basketball coach Frank Haith, along with his wife, Pam, donated 60 adidas backpacks filled with school supplies to local members of the Tulsa Boys & Girls Club as part of a Back to School Bash that the TU men's basketball program hosted on Tuesday evening at the Reynolds Center.
The backpacks and school supplies were given to members of three area Boys & Girls Clubs and were a reward for those who were the best participants and their club during the summer and showed a passion for leadership and learning.
"We (Frank and Pam) have been involved with Boys & Girls Clubs in previous stops at Miami and Missouri and we wanted to get it going here in Tulsa," Haith said. "It's something very dear to our hearts because of what the Boys & Girls Clubs stand for, being a safe place for our youth to go and learn academically and participate in activities."
Haith and TU men's basketball student-athletes also talked to the children on the importance of education as they prepare for the 2018-19 academic year. The night concluded with members of the team leading games on the court for the children.
"It's always great doing things like this for the community and for kids who are less fortunate," senior DaQuan Jeffries said. "A lot of these kids look up to us, so it's pretty fun."
Each adidas backpack was filled with school supplies like pencils, notebooks and rulers along with a voucher for tickets to an upcoming TU game.
"We're ingrained in this community, and we want these young folks to know we care," Haith said. "We're going to go out in there in the fall and spend some time with them and hopefully it's a partnership that can continue to grow."
