UCF Slips Past Tulsa on Saturday Afternoon, 64-62

ORLANDO — Tulsa went on a 22-3 run in the first half and led by as much as 15 points, but UCF shot 50-percent in the second half to rally for a 64-62 win on Saturday afternoon at CFE Arena.
DaQuan Jeffries led the way with 15 points and nine rebounds for Golden Hurricane (12-7, 2-4), who scored 23 fast-break points and shot 40-percent in the contest. Sterling Taplin added 14 points.
Meanwhile, B.J. Taylor led the Knights (14-3, 4-1) with 15 points and Collin Smith scored all 13 of his points in the second half. UCF got another dozen points from Tacko Fall and Aubrey Dawkins.
UCF scored the first six points of the game before the Hurricane ripped off its 22-3 run to take the upper hand. Six different players scored during the stretch, while the TU defense held the Knights without a point for nearly seven minutes.
Curran Scott got it started with a 3-pointer before a jumper by Jeriah Horne. Sterling Taplin and Elijah Joiner each connected from outside and pushed the ball in transition, which led to three straight fast-break buckets.
Fall broke the UCF drought with a three-point play, but another Horne jumper and Taplin trey made it 22-9 with 9:31 remaining in the half.
Tulsa took its largest lead, 28-13, with 5:11 on the clock following a free throw by DaQuan Jeffries, who finished the half with four points, five rebounds, three blocks and two assists.
However, UCF answered with an 11-2 run to trim the deficit down to 30-23, but two Lawson Korita free throws gave the Hurricane a 32-23 advantage at halftime.
The Knights used a 10-2 run midway through the second half to take its first lead, 45-44, since the game's opening minutes. UCF led by as much as 54-47 with 6:36 to play, but the Hurricane would not allow another basket the rest of the way.
Tulsa got within a point with a 6-0 run and then tied the score at 57 with 1:04 left following two free throws from Taplin. UCF would score the next four points at the free-throw line and the advantage was 63-59 with 19 seconds left.
Scott hit a triple to bring the Hurricane within a point, 63-62, with just 12 ticks remaining. Tulsa was forced to foul and Taylor hit the first shot but missed the second, giving TU the chance to tie or take the lead.
However, Tulsa was unable to get a shot off and time expired for the 64-62 final score.
Tulsa will return to the hardwood for a 6 p.m. (CT) matchup at Cincinnati (15-3, 4-1) on Wednesday, Jan. 24.
