Tulsa Cruises to 72-39 Win over UAPB

TULSA, Okla. –– Jeriah Horne scored a game-high 22 points as Tulsa cruised to a 72-39 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff Wednesday night in front of 2,781 fans at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
Tulsa improved to 7-1 on the season, winning its sixth straight game, while the UAPB Golden Lions fell to 1-6 overall.
It was a complete game for Horne, as the junior connected on 8-of-10 field goals, including 4-of-5 treys and 2-of-2 from the line, while adding a game-high 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals in 23 minutes.
The Tulsa bench, led by Horne, out-scored the Golden Lions bench 42-to-18 and as a whole 10 of Tulsa's 11 players scored in the contest. Brandon Rachal added 10 points, 6 rebounds and a game-high 4 steals for the Hurricane.
The 39 points was the fewest for a Tulsa opponent at the Reynolds Center since Frank Haith's third game as the Hurricane coach on November 19, 2014, when Tulsa posted a 65-39 win over Abilene Christian. A game later Tulsa held Auburn to 35 points in a neutral site game on Nov. 24, 2014.

For the game, Tulsa shot 46-percent from the field, 47-percent from 3-point range and 83-percent from the charity stripe. The Hurricane held UAPB to a field goal percentage of 32 percent, 23 percent from behind the arc, and scored 27 points off of 24 UAPB turnovers.
"I thought defensively we were outstanding. If you look at our numbers defensively they were really, really good," said Tulsa head coach Frank Haith. "I thought we were locked in. We had way too many turnovers, but if we cut some of those turnovers down, we'd probably hold them to the low 30s. We had some live ball turnovers that they turned into points."
It was a game of runs for Tulsa as the Hurricane began the game on a 17-2 run and started out the first 7 minutes of the second half on a 20-4 run and later in the half put together a 20-9 run.
The Hurricane came out in the second half on an 11-2 run to take a 41-18 lead at the 15:48 mark. Tulsa increased its lead to 50-20 with 13:01 remaining on the second-half clock and had its largest lead of 42 points twice in the contest. The first coming at the 8:40 mark when Lawson Korita knocked down a 3-pointer to make the score 66-24, and then again at the 4:24 mark when Darien Jackson scored his lone basket on a layup for a 72-30 lead.
It took over 2 minutes for either team to score at the start of the game. Tulsa put the first 2 points on the board with 2 Rachal free throws and the Hurricane didn't score its first field goal until the 14:42 mark when Horne hit a jumper.
UAPB scored its first field goal at the 16:50 mark to tie the score at 2-2, and as Tulsa built a 17-2 lead the Golden Lions went scoreless for the next 7:39 before breaking its drought at the 9:11 mark.
The Hurricane took its largest first-half lead of 21 points when Horne knocked down a 3-pointer with 6:53 on the clock to make the score 25-4. The Lions whittled the Tulsa lead down to 14 points by the end of the first half, going on a 12-5 run in the final 5 minutes.
Tulsa took a 30-16 lead into the locker room at the half.
Horne led all scorers in the first 20 minutes with 10 points as the bench scored 20 of Tulsa's 30 first-half points. Tulsa shot 43 percent from the field and held UAPB to 26 percent.
Tulsa continues a three-game home stand Saturday afternoon at the Donald W. Reynolds Center with a match-up against Arkansas State. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
