PHILADELPHIA — Sterling Taplin became the 38th player in Tulsa history to reach 1,000 career points, but Temple pulled away from the short-handed Golden Hurricane late for an 84-73 win on Saturday afternoon at the Liacouras Center.

Martins Igbanu and Curran Scott each scored 15 points to lead the Golden Hurricane (16-12, 6-9), who played without injured leading scorer DaQuan Jeffries. Taplin finished with 11 points and now has 1,004 points in his career.

The Hurricane heated up to shoot 53.6-percent in the second half and the visitors scored 32 points in the paint in the contest.

Meanwhile, Shizz Alston led all scorers with 24 points, while Quinton Rose finished with 23 points for the Owls (20-7, 10-4). Temple shot 50.8-percent and hit 10 3-pointers, six of which came in the second half.

Tulsa had an early 5-3 advantage before the Owls went on a 12-0 run to take the lead. The Owls held a 20-10 advantage following a pair of Justyn Hamilton free throws with 10:14 on the clock, but the Hurricane would outscore the Owls 20-11 the rest of the way to pull within 31-30 at halftime.

That stretch started with an 8-0 run aided by back-to-back 3-pointers from Scott and Jeriah Horne. Tulsa hit all 11 of its free throw attempts in the first half, including six makes in the final three minutes to cut into the Owls lead.

Both teams started the second half hot and the Owls outscored the Hurricane 17-9 over the first six minutes of the period for a 48-39 lead. Tulsa attacked inside with baskets from Darien Jackson and Horne to trim the deficit to 48-43.

The Temple lead remained at five points, 60-55, with 10 minutes to go following an acrobatic layup by Taplin, which gave him his 1,000th point.

However, the Owls started to pull away over the final seven minutes with the help of a 12-2 scoring run on its way to the 84-73 final.

Tulsa will return to the Donald W. Reynolds Center for an 8 p.m. matchup against Tulane (4-21, 0-13) on Thursday, Feb. 28.
