LAWRENCE, Kan. – Tori Stafford and Morgan Neal each had three hits and a pair of RBIs on the day as Tulsa defeated Nebraska, 6-5, in eight innings before a 4-0 win over Kansas on Saturday afternoon on the second day of the Rock Chalk Challenge.
With the wins, the Golden Hurricane improved to 17-8 on the season and the squad has won seven of its last eight games. Chenise Delce had six strikeouts in a shutout of the Jayhawks to move her record to 6-3, while Kassidy Scott improved to 5-1 with the victory against the Huskers.
Tulsa will wrap up play at the Rock Chalk Challenge against Nebraska at 11 a.m.
Game One
Tori Stafford's single in the bottom of the eighth drove in Sarah Briers and the winning run to lift Tulsa to a 6-5 win over Nebraska in the first game of the day.
Morgan Neal went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Aubree Seaney had a 2-for-3 day and drove in a run. Mikayla Whitten also homered, her second of the spring, to back Kassidy Scott's eight-inning performance in the circle.
The Huskers (10-10) jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first, but the Hurricane struck back with four runs in the bottom of the frame.
Neal doubled home two runs to tie the game before Jesse Smith and Seaney plated two more for the 4-2 lead. Whitten extended the lead to 5-2 in the top of the fourth with her solo shot to left field.
However, Nebraska got one back in the fifth and Rylie Unzicker tied the score in the seventh with a two-run homer. Using the international tie-breaker rule in extra innings, Scott kept the Huskers off the board to give the Hurricane a chance to win it in the bottom of the eighth.
With Briers placed on second to start the inning, an Alexis Perry bunt moved the winning run to third before Stafford lined a hit to right field to give the Hurricane the 6-5 victory.
Game Two
Chenise Delce allowed just two hits and struck out six on the way to her second shutout of the season, leading Tulsa to a 4-0 win over Kansas in the nightcap.
The freshman moved to 6-3 on the season with the win, while Tori Stafford went 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead the offense. Josie Muffley and Sarah Briers also drove in runs for the Hurricane.
The Jayhawks managed one hit off Delce in the second inning and another in the seventh and no KU player made it safely past second base in the contest.
Tulsa got on the board with two runs in the fourth off run-scoring hits from Briers and Stafford. The lead moved to 3-0 in the fifth when Julia Hollingsworth scored on a wild pitch. TU got its final run an inning later on Josie Muffley's sacrifice fly.
The Jayhawks put two runners on in the bottom of the seventh, but Delce got two strikeouts to close out the win.
