TULSA, Okla. –– The University of Tulsa signed six recruits to national letters-of-intent for the December signing period, Golden Hurricane Head Coach Philip Montgomery announced today.
The Hurricane gained four offensive players –– two receivers, one quarterback and one running back –– and two student-athletes on the defensive side of the ball –– linebacker and safety.
I'm extremely excited about this class. We've been able to add speed to some areas, added length in some areas and have addressed areas of need," said Montgomery. "I think this is a talented class coming from different places as we were able to expand our recruiting footprint."
"Obviously, with covid and the issues it brought, this has been a very unique year in everything, but especially recruiting. Most of these kids haven't been able to step on campus or been able to be around us. As coaches, we haven't been able to go on the road, haven't been able to be in homes so the amount of faith they have in us as coaches and this university is big. We're excited to get them on campus and for them to be a part of our family."
Tulsa dipped into four states with the early signing class, including one each from Louisiana, Missouri, Tennessee and three from Texas.
Scottie Alexander, a receiver who comes to Tulsa from Collierville High School in Tennessee, had 406 receiving yards on 27 receptions for a 15.0 average his senior season. Running back Bill Jackson, who comes from Cardinal Ritter College Prep in St. Louis, Missouri, was one of the state's top players. Linebacker Jaden Moore comes from Green Oaks High School in Shreveport, Louisiana, where he was credited with 308 tackles and six interceptions in his final three seasons.
The Texas signees include quarterback Braylon Braxton, receiver Marquis Shoulders and safety Zion Hopes.
Braxton threw for 1,342 yards and 16 TDs in just eight games as a senior, while as a junior threw for 3,236 yards and 45 touchdowns and rushed for 849 yards and 11 TDs at Independence High School. Shoulders, who has top-end speed, played mostly running back at Katy Tompkins High School, but will be positioned at receiver for the Hurricane. Hopes, who tallied 86 tackles and 10 passes defended in 10 games his senior campaign at Jefferson High School, brings great size to the safety position.
"I'm excited about the momentum this adds as we continue to build the rest of the class through the month of February. This initial class of signees will definitely be one that will make its mark at this university and on our program," Montgomery said.
"We addressed several key areas and still have a few more to address with the February recruiting class. As we continue to look at our depth chart, we feel that these guys can have a dramatic impact as we continue to build and grow our program," added Montgomery.
