Tulsa’s Shamari Brooks Named to the Maxwell Award Preseason Watch List

SOUTHHAMPTON, Pa. –– The University of Tulsa senior running back Shamari Brooks was selected to the preseason watch list for the 84th Maxwell Award presented annually to the most outstanding player in college football, it was announced today by the Maxwell Football Club.

The Maxwell Award has been presented to the College Player of the Year since 1937 and is named in honor of Robert "Tiny" Maxwell, a former standout at the Swarthmore College and a renowned sportswriter and football official.

The Maxwell Award watch list once again incorporates a broad spectrum of Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) programs and conferences from coast to coast, and will feature fresh faces, as 2019 winner Joe Burrow (LSU) and finalists Chase Young (Ohio State) and Jalen Hurts (Oklahoma) have all moved on to the NFL.
Shamari Brooks runs clear

The 5'9" Brooks enters the 2020 season ranked 5^th on the school's career rushing list and 9^th for career rushing TDs. He has played in 32 career games and has 2,700 total rushing yards and 23 TDs. Brooks enters this season needing 1,217 rushing yards to tie D'Angelo Brewer (2014-17) for the school's all-time rushing lead.

Last week, Brooks was named to the watch list for the Doak Walker Award, given to the nation's top running back.

Brooks rushed for a team-high 1,046 yards and six touchdowns in 12 games last year, while earning second-team American Athletic Conference accolades. Brooks turned in a career-best 202 rushing yards on 16 carries in the season finale against East Carolina to finish the season ranked 5^th in the AAC.

A three-year letterwinner and two-year starter, Brooks has 12-career 100+ rushing games, including four in each of his three seasons.

Tulsa opens the 2020 football season on Saturday, September 5, with a home game against the Toledo Rockets.
