Hurricane Drops Doubleheader to Shockers Friday

4/30/2021 8:45:00 PM | Softball

TULSA, Okla. – Kylie Norwood goes 3-7 with 2 runs batted in across two games for the Hurricane; however, it is not enough as Tulsa falls 11-1 and 7-6 to the Wichita State Shockers Friday at the Collins Family Softball Complex.

The Hurricane started game two of the doubleheader strong, scoring 4 runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Chenise Delce started the inning off, singling to left field.

Tulsa put runners on the corners, using a Wichita State throwing error to their advantage. Kyndal Pirtle walked, loading the bases for Hurricane first baseman Aubree Seaney. The sophomore roped a doubled to right-center field, scoring all three runners and giving TU a 3-1 advantage.

With 2 outs in the inning Norwood continued the Hurricane's hot hitting by driving a double to right center scoring Seaney from second.

TU extended its lead to 5-1 on a walk, fielder's choice and single in the bottom of the 3rd, as Sarah Briers drove in pinch runner Gracie Jarvis.

The Shockers fought back, with two outs in the top of the 6th. Back-to-back doubles by Wichita State cut the TU lead to 5-2. After a WSU batter was hit by a pitch, Kaylee Huecker sent a shot over the left field fence to tie the game.

In the bottom of the 6th, Pirtle singled to the pitcher and pinch hitter Makayla Jackson drew a walk to put runners at 1st and 2nd with one out. Norwood singled up the middle scoring Pirtle from 2nd and giving TU the one-run lead.

Kassidy Scott relieved Delce in the circle, recording two outs after giving up a lead-off single. With the Shockers' tying run at third, Delce re-entered the circle, but she gave up a game-tying triple to the next WSU hitter.

After walking the next batter, Sara Llamas-Howell entered the game for Delce looking to end the scoring for the Shockers. Llamas-Howell, threw a wild pitch which scored the go-ahead run from third, giving WSU a 7-6 advantage.

Alexis Perry led off the bottom of the 7th with a walk, and advanced to second base on a Delce single. After sliding into second base on the infield single, Perry shot up off the ground limping, in-so-doing coming off the bag. She was tagged out by the Shockers' infielder giving TU its first out of the inning.

Imani Edwards walked putting two on base, but a ground out and strikeout ending the game for TU as they fell 7-6.

In the first game of the day, the Hurricane started slow, allowing WSU to score in the first 4 innings. The Shockers built an 11-0 lead that was too much for Tulsa to overcome, as the only run the Hurricane could muster was a sacrifice fly by Perry in the bottom of the 5th.

The Hurricane fell to 21-12 on the season and 12-5 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Shockers improved to 36-9-1 on the year and 17-4-1 in AAC action.

Tulsa will be back in Saturday, May 1, as the Hurricane take on the Shockers for the 3rd game of the series at the Collins Family Softball Complex at 2:00 p.m. aired on ESPN+.
