TULSA, Okla. –– The wait is over. The Tulsa Golden Hurricane football team will open the 2021 football season in a pre-Labor Day Holiday game this Thursday night, Sept. 2, at H.A. Chapman Stadium against the Cal Davis Aggies.
Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. Pregame festivities with tailgating, inflatables and the beer garden will begin on Chapman Commons at 3:30 p.m. Live music with Oklahoma Country Artist Trett Charles begins at 4 p.m.
"I'm really excited. Game week is finally here," said Tulsa Head Coach Philip Montgomery. "You go through all of the winter workouts, get to spring ball, go through the summer, get through fall camp, you put in all this work and now you get to this first week. Guys are excited, coaches are excited. You have to let it keep building. It's a special time of year."
The Aggies, who played a 5-game spring season, return an astounding 81 lettermen and 21 of 22 starters.
"Cal Davis is a really, really good football team. They're extremely well coached. I have a lot of respect for Dan Hawkins. Look where he's been and what he's done, this team is following suit with that," said Montgomery. "They play extremely aggressive defensively and do a great job of tackling in space. Offensively, they're innovative. They have motion involved, a lot of different formations. They're going to run it and throw it."
"They have talent and experienced talent on both sides of the ball and in special teams. It will be a great early test for us. Glad we're getting to play at home," added Montgomery.
