MEMPHIS, Tenn. ––
In what amounted to a defensive struggle, the Memphis Tigers came out on top with a 26-10 victory over Tulsa Thursday night in front of 23,980 fans at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium.

It was a solid defensive performance for the Hurricane. Tulsa totaled six TFL, five pass breakups, three QB hurries and forced three fumbles while recovering two and held the Tigers to just 79 rushing yards. Justin Wright led the Hurricane defenders with 13 tackles, 2.5 TFL, one breakup, one forced fumble and one QB hurry. Tyon Davis had the two fumble recoveries for Tulsa, while adding eight tackles and three pass breakups.

On the short week or preparation, the Hurricane offense managed just 207 yards of total offense with 31 of those yards coming on the ground. Davis Brin began the contest as the starting quarterback but being slowed by injury was replaced by Braylon Braxton in the second quarter.

Memphis totaled 341 yards while holding a 36:14 to 23:46 edge in possession time.

After a 20-3 Memphis lead at halftime, the Tigers scored just six points in the second half on two field goals. Tulsa had its lone TD of the game in the final period.

Tulsa began the fourth quarter getting to the Memphis 20-yard line, but failed on a 4th-and-6. Later in the quarter, the Hurricane scored its' TD on a 13-yard pass from Braxton to Keylon Stokes to make the score 23-10 with 5:27 remaining in the contest.

To start the contest, Tulsa capitalized on a first possession fumble by the Tigers as Zack Long knocked through a 24-yard field goal to cap a 25-yard drive. Memphis wasted little time, though, in taking the lead on a 68-yard touchdown at the 10:09 mark for a 7-3 advantage, capping a 70-yard, three-play drive.

Starting at the Tulsa 35-yard line following a 25-yard punt return the Tigers were held to just a field goal by the Hurricane defense as the 49-yard field goal hit the crossbar and bounced over for the three points. The score gave Memphis a 10-3 lead with 6:36 remaining in the first quarter.

Two critical penalties helped the Tigers on its third scoring drive for a 17-3 lead. Memphis capped the 69-yard scoring drive with a 3-yard run on the first play of the second quarter.

At the end of the first period, Memphis held a 141 to 32-yard edge in total offense while also holding a possession time advantage, 8:31 to 6:29.
