WICHITA, Kan.
– Another big inning proved costly as the University of Tulsa fell 15-7 in five innings in the series finale against Wichita State on Sunday afternoon.

The Golden Hurricane led 7-6 heading into the fifth inning but were tagged for nine runs in the bottom frame, ending the game. The long ball continued to give the Hurricane problems in the third games as it had all weekend, with Wichita State homering four times for eight of its runs.

Tulsa finished the weekend 12-22-1 and 1-4-1 in the American Athletic Conference, while Wichita State moves to 20-10 and 3-0 in The American after the series sweep.

Samantha Pochop (7-10) came on in relief and eventually was credited with the loss. The senior threw 3.0 innings and allowed five hits and six runs. Sara Llamas-Howell earned the start and pitched 1.1 innings with five hits, five runs and three walks. Makenzie Brown finished the game, walking three giving up a hit and allowing four runs.

Tulsa and Wichita State traded home runs in the first inning, with Haley Morgan going deep before the Shockers matched the solo home run in their half of the inning. It was Morgan's third of the season and first batting out of the two-spot as Kylie Norwood took leadoff duties in Sunday's game.

The second inning came dangerously close to falling apart for Tulsa as a two-run home run put Wichita State up 3-1 with one out. The Shockers then loaded the bases and earned another run via a walk to take a 4-1 advantage. Pochop then entered the game and forced a sac fly and a strikeout to limit the damage to four as Tulsa trailed 5-1.

Tulsa got a run back with a sacrifice fly of its own in the top of the third, but Wichita State again loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning with nobody out thanks to an error, walk and hit batsman. Pochop settled down to allow just one run on a sacrifice fly, and then set the next two down.

Down 6-2, Tulsa needed a big inning, and the Hurricane got what it needed in the fourth. Imani Edwards got the ball rolling with a single and stolen base. She scored on Claira Skaggs single. After the first out moved Skaggs over, Norwood hammered a double over the left fielder, scoring another run to cut the deficit to 6-4.

With Norwood and Morgan on second and third, Abby Jones tied the game with a single up the middle, advancing to second on a throw that was too late to catch Morgan. A wild pitch moved Jones to third and she scored on a groundout from Kailyn Bearpaw, giving Tulsa a 7-6 advantage.

The lead wouldn't last, however, as Wichita State struck the fatal blows in the bottom of the fifth. A leadoff single was rewarded with a two-run home run. Four batters later a three-run home run and suddenly the Shockers were up 11-7 and Brown stepped into the circle.

After a single, Wichita State wouldn't get another hit, nor would WSU need one. The next batter was hit by a pitch, then a walk loaded the bases. Another hit-by-pitch made it 12-7, followed by a walk to make it 13 runs. A catcher's interference call on a 3-2 pitch brought in a run and the game ended on a four-pitch walk.

Tulsa was outhit 11-7 and committed two errors to Wichita State's clean game defensively. The Hurricane also left six runners on base while WSU stranded five. Jones continued her hot hitting with a two-RBI single and drew a walk. Each of the first five batters for Tulsa ended the game with at least one RBI.

Up next, the Hurricane have a weekend off from conference play before heading to Memphis, Tenn. to take on the Tigers. A midweek showdown with the top-ranked Oklahoma Sooners awaits on Wednesday in Norman, Okla. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. on Bally Sports Extra.
