TULSA, Okla. –– MaKayla Jackson and Imani both homered as the University of Tulsa softball team beat East Carolina 5-3 in the first game of the series on Friday night at Collins Family Softball Complex.
The Golden Hurricane improves to 16-29-1 and 5-9-1 in the American Athletic Conference, as ECU falls to 20-33, 2-14 in The American.
Samantha Pochop picked up her 11th win of the season as she threw another complete game. The senior gave up four hits and walked three while striking out eight in the win. Jordyn Hatch (2-14) took the loss for the Pirates as she split duty with Addy Bullis, who pitched 2.0 innings in relief.
With two outs in the bottom of the third, Jackson hit a solo blast over the wall in left center for the game's first run. It was her first homer of the season and Tulsa's second hit of the game.
An inning later, Abby Jones drew a walk with one out, followed by an infield single from Kailyn Bearpaw after a nice diving stop from the shortstop. This brought up Edwards, who hit a towering shot to dead center that grazed the bushes on the back of the wall as it fell for her third home run of the season.
East Carolina struck back in the fifth as it led the inning with back-to-back solo homers to cut Tulsa's lead in half, 4-2.
The edged closer in the sixth after consecutive walks and a wild pitch put runners on second and third with nobody out. Claira Skaggs made a great play on a smoked line drive for the first out. But then a grounder that just evaded Edwards' glove brought in one run to make it 4-3 with runners still on second and third. But Pochop struck out the next two to end the inning.
The Hurricane would add an insurance run in the bottom of the frame. Bearpaw singled for the second time and exited for Callie Davis as a pinch runner. Davis was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Imani Edwards. Celeste Wood picked up her team-leading 33rd RBI as she singled past the outstretched glove of the second baseman, bringing Davis home from second to make it 5-3.
There were no theatrics in the seventh as Pochop came out and set the Pirates down in order with a line out and two ground outs.
The Hurricane and Pirates will meet again on Saturday for the second game of the series. First pitch time is set for 3 p.m. and will air on ESPN+.
