CHARLOTTE, N.C.
– Early goals doomed the Golden Hurricane women's soccer team as Tulsa could not battle back to overcome the deficit in a 3-0 loss at Charlotte on Thursday evening.

Tulsa dropped to 3-7-4 on the season, 1-1-3 in The American after losing its first conference game of the season. The defeat also snapped a streak of seven games without a loss. Charlotte improved to 6-4-4 and 2-1-2 in league play. Thursday's match got the 49ers back in the win column before a challenging game against No. 9 Memphis on Sunday.

Six different Hurricane put shots on target against Charlotte, and Tulsa had 10 corner kicks in the game, but despite its best efforts, the TU offense couldn't get one past goalkeeper Emma Wakeman.

Two of the top goalkeepers in the conference in Wakeman and Tatum Sanders made for some spectacular saves. Sanders and Wakeman each made six saves for their respective sides, with Sanders having to make four in the opening half and Wakeman being forced into five saves to keep the shutout going in the second.

Tulsa will finish a three-game road swing with a trip to Greenville, N.C. to face East Carolina on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. and the game will air on ESPN+.

How it Happened
Tulsa was on the front foot at the start of the game, recording three shots and a corner in the opening seven minutes, but was unable to take advantage of the pressure. It was Charlotte who broke the deadlock at the 7:13 minute with its first chance of the game.

Julia Patrom turned into space about 15 yards away from the box. With two passes, the 49ers unlocked the Tulsa defense as Patrom found Payton Patrick beyond the Tulsa backline. Patrick took one touch and then found Tash Hudson in the center of the box. Hudson played it first time with her right foot and it found the left corner of goal to go up 1-0.

Eleven minutes later, Tash got her brace and doubled the Charlotte lead. Macey Bader got to the endline on the left wing and played a cross into the box. Tash met it perfectly for a one-time finish with her right, just beating Sanders to the ball, to extend the lead to 2-0.

Just before halftime, Charlotte scored its third and final goal of the match. The 49ers earned a corner with 30 seconds to play in the half. Bader took it left-footed from the right corner. It was played to the near post and brought down by Kristy Campbell, who then was able to fire it into the roof of the net from a tight angle to give the hosts a 3-0 lead at the break.

Tulsa didn't give up, however, continuing to apply pressure in the second half. The Hurricane took seven shots in the second half, five on target, and had three corners. Karsen Aguirre came closest to giving TU a consolation goal in the 85th minute.

She stole a ball off a Charlotte midfielder and took a rip from 25 yards out on the right side of the pitch. It dipped dangerously, forcing the goalkeeper to make a last second tip onto the crossbar.

The Hurricane would test Wakeman two more times as Madison Tokarchik put a shot on target and then Ashlyn Fernandez forced a diving save in the final minute of play.
