
Tulsa’s Chris Nerio Appointed to NATA Intercollegiate Council

TULSA, Okla. –– Longtime University of Tulsa sports medicine professional Chris Nerio has been appointed to a four-year term as the American Athletic Conference's representative to the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) Intercollegiate Council for Sports Medicine-D1. His appointment starts July 1, 2023.
The NATA Intercollegiate Council for Sports Medicine (ICSM) Division I Subcommittee addresses issues affecting the student-athlete and athletic trainers in Division I collegiate institutions. The subcommittee will identify relevant, timely issues in the field of athletic training and bring those issues forward so the committee can collaborate with various organizing bodies of collegiate and intercollegiate athletics to improve student-athlete safety, well-being and healthcare by influencing policy and providing resources.
Nerio has been with TU's sports medicine department for 19 years and oversees the entire health and performance department, while also serving as head athletic trainer for the football program. He was named the school's assistant athletics director for student-athlete health and performance and director of sports medicine in July 2018, following 14 years as a key member of TU's sports medicine staff.
During his tenure, Nerio has served as associate director for sports medicine for four years (2015-18), working with football and women's golf. Before that, he was an assistant athletic trainer for 10 years, assuming that role in July 2005.
Before coming to Tulsa, Nerio was the head athletic trainer for the Rhein Fire, an NFL Europe team, in Germany. He also served as an athletic training intern for the Kansas City Chiefs, a graduate assistant athletic trainer at Tulsa, and a student athletic trainer at Oklahoma State University.
Nerio served as treasurer of the Oklahoma Athletic Trainers' Association (OATA) in 2010-17. He earned his bachelor's degree from Oklahoma State in 2001 and his master's degree from Tulsa in 2003.
