TULSA, Okla. –– Golden Hurricane guard PJ Haggerty was named the American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Week for the 11th time this season after a record-setting week, the league announced on Monday.
In Wednesday's game at South Florida, Haggerty scored 19 points to set a new freshman scoring record at the University of Tulsa, passing the legendary Shea Seals. He followed with his first career double-double, recording career highs with 30 points and 10 rebounds, to lift Tulsa to an overtime win over the Rice Owls. In the process, he scored his 500th point of the season, making him the first Tulsa player to reach that mark since James Woodard scored 528 in the 2013-14 season.
For the week, Haggerty averaged 24.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 3.0 steals while shooting 53.3 percent from the floor. In 77 minutes of action, the freshman guard had only two turnovers.
The University of Tulsa men's basketball team heads to Wichita, Kan. to face Wichita State in the second meeting of the rivals this season. The Hurricane made a second half comeback to knock off the Shockers 79-68 in late January. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. in a nationally televised game on ESPNU.
