Haggerty also named to All-Conference Third Team
TULSA, Okla. –– PJ Haggerty was unanimously named the 2023-24 American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year as voted on by member coaches, the league announced on Tuesday morning.
He becomes the first Golden Hurricane to win the award in its tenure with The American, and third in school history. Greg Harrington was the 1999 WAC Freshman of the Year, and Shea Seals was tabbed as the Missouri Valley Conference recipient in 1994. In addition, Haggerty was also named to the All-Conference Third Team, becoming the 107th player in TU history to get named to an All-Conference first, second or third team. He was also selected to the All-Freshmen Team unanimously.
Joining him on the All-Freshman Team is guard Tyshawn Archie and forward Matt Reed. They are the fifth, sixth and seventh Hurricane to receive this honor and first since James Woodard and D'Andre Wright were selected to the C-USA All-Freshman Team in 2012-13.
The freshmen played a large role in Tulsa's success this season. Haggerty, Reed and Archie combined to score 991 of Tulsa's 2,246 points, which is 44.1 percent of Tulsa's scoring in 2023-24. They also made-up 31.4 percent of Tulsa's rebounds, combining to grab 334 off the glass.
A Crosby, Texas, native, Haggerty ended the regular season second in the conference and 18th in the NCAA for scoring at 20.9 points per game, which ranks first in the nation among freshmen. The guard led The American freshmen in rebounds (163), steals (59) and assists (110).
He scored 20 or more points 19 times this season and reached 30 twice, including a season-high 32 to knock off No. 24 South Florida in the final game of the regular season. He finished the regular season first on Tulsa's all-time freshman scoring list with 628 points and is now 10th on the overall TU single-season scoring list. The redshirt freshman guard also ranks first in assists and second in steals for freshmen at TU. He enters the conference tournament third in the nation with 228 made free throws and needs two to become Tulsa's single season free throw leader.
Haggerty collected 14 AAC Freshman of the Week awards out of a possible 18 weeks. He set a conference record, breaking the mark set a year earlier by former member UCF's Taylor Hendricks, who was selected nine times.
Archie appeared in all 30 games this season as a true freshman and provided a spark off the bench. He scored 223 points (7.4 per game), which was second-most in the conference for freshmen behind Haggerty. The Houston, Texas native's quick hands led to 32 steals and a plethora of highlight dunks. He led the team in 3-point shooting percentage (37.8 percent), and his 28 makes was fourth on the team and led all freshmen in The American. He also was third on the team in assists (38) and fourth in steals. Archie has scored in double figures in 11 contests this season, including scoring 17 three times.
Also a true freshman, Reed appeared in all 30 games with six starts. A forward from Carrollton, Texas, Reed's tenacity to fight for rebounds helped him finish the regular season with 129 boards, which is third-most on the team and among the conference's freshmen. His work on the glass paid dividends as well, pulling down 37 offensive rebounds, which was second on the team and led the league's freshmen. He ranks eighth on Tulsa's freshmen rebounding list.
In an overtime contest with Tulane, Reed recorded his first double-double with 13 points and 16 rebounds, both career marks. It was the most rebounds by a Tulsa player since Stephen Idlet matched the mark in 2009 and was one off Michael Ruffin's Reynolds Center record. He finished the regular season averaging 4.8 points and 4.4 rebounds.
