Anderson’s Gem Spoiled in 1-0 Loss

3/23/2024 5:25:00 PM | Softball

DENTON, Texas – North Texas got one hit off Anneca Anderson on Saturday, and it made all the difference in a 1-0 loss for the Golden Hurricane in Lovelace Stadium.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Mikayla Smith hit a home run to left field, walking off the Hurricane. The Mean Green has won both games of the series in walk-off fashion on a home run.

Tulsa falls to 19-10 and 5-3 in conference play with the loss. The conference-leading Mean Green improves to 17-12 and 7-1 in The American.

Anderson (6-1) is tagged with her first loss of the season but was brilliant throughout. The freshman gave up just the one, costly hit and run, but otherwise allowed two walks and one batter reached on an error. She struck out eight batters, tying her season high. Over her last 13.1 innings, she's given up just two hits.

North Texas pitching and defense has done a good job of negating a powerful Tulsa offense, and today Skylar Savage (4-4) got the job done in the circle. She went the distance and allowed five hits and two walks while striking out three.

MacKenzie Denson had two hits for Tulsa, including the lone extra-base hit on a double in the fifth. She was thrown out trying to stretch for a triple, marking the second time this weekend a Tulsa batter has been caught attempting to stretch a hit. Abby Jones and Claira Skaggs also picked up hits, and Anderson batted in the seventh a ripped a single to right.

NORTH TEXAS 1, TULSA 0
Tulsa left two runners on base in both the third and fourth innings. After a walk and an out to start the third, MacKenzie Denson laid down a perfect bunt for Tulsa's first hit of the game. A groundout and fly out ended the opportunity. In the fourth, Claira Skaggs and Abby Jones singled to lead things off, but neither batter advanced from there.

Denson stepped in with one out in the fifth and doubled to the wall in right center. She stretched for a triple, but a perfect relay from the North Texas defense got her at the bag and erased a golden opportunity for the Hurricane.

In the sixth, Tulsa got a runner on thanks to a one-out walk, but advanced no further. Anneca Anderson stepped in to bat in the seventh and singled with two outs but was left there.

North Texas won the game in the bottom of the seventh with a one-out solo home run to left.
