TULSA, Okla. – Trailing 5-3 with one last at-bat facing Tulsa, the Golden Hurricane scored three runs on a walk-off double by Maci Cole for a 6-5 comeback victory over the UAB Blazers Thursday afternoon at the Collins Family Softball Complex in the first of a three-game series.
Tulsa improved to 20-11 on the season and 6-4 in American Athletic Conference play, while UAB improves to 14-18 and 5-5 in The American.
Tulsa recovered from a costly sixth inning that saw the Blazers put up four runs on three hits, including a two-run shot over the left field fence.
Imani Edwards opened the bottom of the 7th on a fielding error and advanced to second on Claira Skaggs. Abby Jones' bunt advanced the runners to load the bases and a fielder's choice on Kennedy Cramer's hit to shortstop scored Edwards. After a flyout to right field by Kailyn Bearpaw for the second out of the inning, Celeste Wood drew a walk to bring up Maci Cole.
Cole doubled to left center field scoring Jones and Cramer tied the score. Wood didn't stop running from first, putting pressure on the shortstop to make an accurate throw after coming out to cutoff the relay throw. The throw home beat Wood but bounced in front of the plate and the catcher was unable to corral the ball as Wood scored the game-winning run.
Tulsa opened the scoring with one run in the third inning on an Edwards double that scored MacKenzie Denson from third base. UAB responded in the top of the 4th as Bella Wiggins laid down a perfect bunt single. A throw to first was too late to catch Wiggins and was inside the bag and wild, resulting in an error that allowed the batter to race all the way around to score.
The Hurricane took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the 5th inning. Tulsa got runners on the corner with one out when Jones hit a sharp ground ball to the shortstop. The shortstop chose to throw to first, but was unable to beat Jones as Edwards scored on the RBI.
In the top of the sixth, it was the Blazers who took a late lead. A walk and back-to-back singles tied the game at 2-2. Then, a wild pitch gave UAB the lead. After a pair of outs, freshman catcher Ant Henderson homered to left to give her team a 5-2 lead.
After losing its previous three games in the final half inning, all at North Texas, the Hurricane reversed course and did the same to the Blazers with its four-run 7th inning.
Kylie Nash came in to pitch in the 5th inning in relief of Maura Moore and got the win to improve to 6-2 on the season
The two teams will be back on the field for a 5 p.m. game Friday and at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Both contests will be aired on ESPN+.
