TULSA, Okla. –– The University of Tulsa men's basketball program officially announced the addition of Navy veteran and Junior College transfer forward Tyler Behrend to the 2024-25 roster, Golden Hurricane head coach Eric Konkol announced this afternoon.
The 6-10 sophomore becomes the seventh newcomer to the 2024-25 Tulsa roster, which now stands at 15.
"We're really excited for Tyler to join us," Konkol said. "It's a unique story and situation, but at the core of it, this is a young man who is really excited about the opportunity to earn a world class degree and play major Division I basketball. Tyler has different experiences in life compared to a number of kids we've recruited to come here. He's a guy who has served our country in the Navy and has played a year of junior college basketball and grown a tremendous amount. He's excited about focusing on getting better at basketball full-time."
Behrend joins the Golden Hurricane having spent the past five years with The United States Navy. During the 2021-22 season, Behrend played at Olympic College while his ship, the USS Theodore Roosevelt was docked while undergoing retrofitting in Bremerton, Wash. Behrend completed his service in the Navy and was discharged in January.
In his one season at Olympic College, the Cincinnati, Ohio, native appeared in all 28 games and made 25 starts. He recorded 14.4 points and 6.8 rebounds in 28.6 minutes per game while shooting 47.3 percent from the floor. He reached double figures in scoring in 20 contests, including a season-high 25 against Skagit Valley, and collected five double-doubles. Behrend helped the Rangers to a 21-8 record and a semifinal appearance in the Northwest Athletic Conference Championships.
Prior to his time in the Navy and at Olympic College, Behrend finished his prep career at Valley Lutheran in Phoenix, Ariz. He scored more than 650 points over his junior and senior campaigns. His senior season, Behrend averaged 19.8 points, scoring 455 in 23 games.
