HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The Golden Hurricane softball team notched its second win of the season 8-7 over Bryant before dropping the Saturday finale 4-1 to hosts Sam Houston in Tulsa's second day at the Bearkat Classic.
The Hurricane moves to 2-1 on the season, while Bryant dropped to 0-3 following its loss to Tulsa, and Sam Houston improved to 3-0 with the afternoon win.
Brinly Maples (1-0) made her first TU start and delivered 5.2 strong innings to collect the win. The junior allowed two runs on five hits, walked one and struck out four. Abby Hayes and Katie Dunakin pitched in relief.
Maura Moore (1-1) got the ball for game two and shut the Bearkats out for four innings before surrendering a run in the fifth and sixth and getting tagged with the loss. In her five innings of work, she allowed just four hits, walked two and struck out five. Three of those four hits were for extra bases with a pair of doubles and a home run. Alexa Hopkins tossed the sixth inning and allowed two runs on one hit with a strikeout and a hit batter.
Four different Hurricane had a multi-hit game in the day's opener, with Amber Burns and Danielle Burns coming through twice, and Celeste Wood and Annika Dill collecting three hits. Wood drove in four runs and Dill had two. Burns and Maci Cole each drove in one. Cole, Dill and Wood homered in the win.
Three different Bulldogs homered in game one, including two in the final inning to make it a tight game. Meaghan Houk homered and tripled to drive in a team-leading three runs.
Paige Knight drove in Tulsa's lone run in the second game, while Claira Skaggs recorded a pair of hits. Tulsa had no extra-base hits in game two.
HOW IT HAPPENED – Game One
Dill doubled in a run in her first career at-bat, and in her first plate appearance of game two, she smashed a two-run home run down the left field line to put Tulsa ahead 2-0 early. Faith Russell, who drew a one-out walk to get on, came around to score.
Bryant got a run back in the bottom of the frame. A leadoff single was rewarded with a one-out triple from Houk to halve the TU lead.
Back-to-back singles from Wood and Turner had Tulsa in business in the second. Whitney Holcomb executed the sacrifice bunt to move them both into scoring position for Burns. The senior singled to center, allowing Wood to score and reestablishing the two-run lead, 3-1.
Wood got her first RBI of the game in the third inning. She doubled to left center, bringing home Dill, who led the inning with a single. Tulsa had runners on second and third, but the next two batters popped out, ending a threat.
In the bottom of the frame, the Bulldogs cut the deficit to 4-2 with a one-out double. Houk scored all the way from first on the play. Maples induced a pair of groundouts to Knight at first to escape without further damage.
In the fifth, Wood broke the game open with Tulsa's second home run of the game. Dill drew a leadoff walk and Skaggs singled up the middle to put two on with one away. Wood hammered a three-run blast to right center to give Tulsa a 7-2 lead.
Cole extended the advantage in the sixth with a one-out solo shot down the left field line. But Bryant responded with a solo shot of its own, and Tulsa's lead was 8-3 heading into the final frame.
The Hurricane got the first out of the inning easily enough, but then a single and home run cut the lead to 8-5. The Bulldogs then got a double and another two-run shot and Tulsa's lead was down to one, 8-7.
Maples came back to the circle to secure the win. She forced a groundout on a 3-2 pitch for the second out. The next batter flied out to center for the final out and the TU win.

HOW IT HAPPENED – Game Two
Tulsa grabbed an early lead in game two but was unable to hold on with just the one run. Each team collected five hits and had no errors.
The Hurricane struck first by taking advantage of singles, walks and mistakes. Russell drew a walk with one away and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Skaggs singled her to third and then Knight singled back to the pitcher as Russell came in to score.
The lead lasted until the fifth inning thanks to good pitching from Moore and the defense behind her. The Bearkats had runners on second and third with nobody out in the first, but a groundout back to Moore, a popup to the shortstop and a strikeout helped TU escape the jam.
SHSU didn't get another hit until the fifth, when the game flipped. A bunt single with one out got a baserunner on board. The runner's speed came in handy as she stole second and then raced around to tie the game 1-1 on a double.
The hosts led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run to take the lead for the first time. It would be all they needed as Moore departed for Hopkins in the circle. However, the Bearkats added on two more with a two-run shot later in the inning for insurance.
Tulsa got a leadoff walk in the top of the seventh, but she got no further than second base. A groundout, strikeout and flyout ended Tulsa's chances and the game.
