GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Golden Hurricane jumped on the Pirates in the second inning of a 5-1 victory in game one of the weekend series with East Carolina at Max R. Joyner Stadium on Friday evening.
Tulsa (13-12, 3-1 The American) scored all of its runs with two outs in the frame. East Carolina (15-9, 3-1 The American) hit a solo home run in the third. The Pirates loaded the bases in the sixth inning but was unable to capitalize.
The big hit of the evening came from second baseman Faith Russell, who drove in all three baserunners with a two-out triple, the first of her career. She finished the game with two hits.
Maura Moore (9-6) recorded her seventh complete game of the season in the start and win Friday. The senior allowed nine hits, but only the one run off the solo home run in the third inning. She struck out four and walked a pair.
Maci Cole and Elle Rouse drove in Tulsa's other runs in the game. Rouse singled home the first run of the game and Cole drew a walk with the bases loaded. She was walked twice on Friday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hurricane did all its damage in the top of the second with a big two-out rally. Amber Turner singled to get a runner on base. Whitney Holcomb followed suit and Brookley Foster drew a full count walk to load the bases.
Rouse stepped in and singled through the right side to bring Turner home for the game's first run. Cole followed with the second walk on a full count to score Holcomb and push the TU lead to 2-0. Russell was next up and smashed a bases-clearing triple past the centerfielder to give the Golden Hurricane a 5-0 advantage.
The Pirates got a run back in the bottom of the third with Emma Jackson's solo home run to cut the TU lead to 5-1. ECU looked poised to really put the pressure on Tulsa in the bottom of the sixth. A leadoff single and then a walk and single with one out loaded the bases. But, Moore got the next batter looking on three pitches before getting a popup to Celeste Wood at first to end the threat.
