BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Golden Hurricane softball team avoided a series sweep with a pair of two-run home runs and a shutout in Sunday's 4-0 win over UAB at Mary Bowers Field.
Tulsa improves to 17-15 on the season (5-4 The American) and moves back over .500 in league play. UAB falls to 13-18 on the season (3-6 The American) after getting held scoreless for the third time this season and second in conference play.
Maci Cole hit her second home run in as many days and fifth of the season with a two-run blast in the third inning. Senior Danielle Burns hit the first home run of her career with a two-run homer to left to give TU some breathing room in the seventh inning. It was part of a two-hit day for Burns. Whitney Holcomb collected another double, giving her one in each contest this weekend.
In the circle, Maura Moore (12-6) spun her ninth complete game and second shutout of the season. Across seven innings, Moore struck out a trio of batters and allowed seven hits with no Blazers crossing home plate.
Caroline McClendon (7-7) also went the distance for UAB. She allowed four runs on four hits with two walks and two struck out.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hurricane shut the Blazers down, but UAB came close to a damaging first inning. After a groundout to lead off the bottom of the first, UAB recorded back-to-back infield singles and a single up the middle to load the bases. Moore got a flyout to right that wasn't deep enough to score a runner, and the final batter of the frame struck out to strand three.
Burns picked up her first hit to lead off the second. After a flyout for the first out, Cole stepped in. The Tulsa shortstop fell behind 1-2 in the count, but on the fourth pitch of the at-bat, she gave the ball a ride to left for her fifth home run of the season, scoring a pinch-running Pascucci and giving Tulsa a 2-0 lead.
That was all Moore would need. She allowed four more hits but kept them to one per inning from the fourth inning on.
Tulsa doubled its lead in the top of the seventh. Holcomb was hit by a pitch with one out. After a flyout for the second out, it brought Burns to the plate. On her second pitch she faced, Burns hit a high fly ball to left that just cleared the wall to put TU up 4-0.
The Blazers got a single with two outs in the seventh, but Moore got a popup to shortstop to secure the 4-0 TU win. Tulsa was outhit 7-4 by the hosts, and the Blazers left nine stranded to Tulsa's three. Neither team committed an era.
