The 1952 football team went into the Gator Bowl with an 8-1-1 regular season record, but fell by one point, 14-13, to the 15th-ranked Florida Gators in virtually a home game for the Gator team in Jacksonville, Florida … Tulsa recorded major wins over Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Arkansas and Texas Tech to complete the season ranked 12th nationally … the Hurricane led the nation in rushing (322.0 ypg) and total offense (466.0 ypg) … team captains were Tommy Hudspeth, Marvin Matuszak and Howard Waugh … Matuszak was a first team Associated Press All-America lineman, while Waugh led the nation in rushing with 1,372 yards, as well as yards per rush at 8.1 … Waugh’s rushing total was 300 yards more than that year’s Heisman Trophy winner, Billy Vessels of Oklahoma.
