Legendary coach Glenn Dobbs (for whom 8th Street was renamed) led the Golden Hurricane to a 9-2 overall record, while finishing in second place in the Missouri Valley Conference … the only losses were to Arkansas (by nine points) and Cincinnati (by five points). TU finished the season with win over Mississippi in the Bluebonnet Bowl by a score of 14-7 … the team led the nation in total offense with a 461.8-yards per game and revolutionized the way football looked at passing … TU led the nation in passing with a 317.9 average per game (this made them the first team in history to pass for more than 300 yards) … quarterback Jerry Rhome was the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy after completing 244 passes for 2, 870 yards and 32 touchdowns … receiver Howard Twilley also broke the receptions and yards records with 95 catches and 1,178 yards.
