1945 OIL BOWL FOOTBALL TEAM
Hall of Fame Honor Team
Class of 2008
The 1940s was an era that The University of Tulsa put its stamp on the college football world, and the 1945 season was America’s first peacetime football season since 1941 … twenty days after the official end of the war, Tulsa opened the ’45 campaign in dominating fashion with a 62-0 drubbing of the Wichita Shockers … it was just the first of five straight wins for a Hurricane team that out-scored those five opponents –– Wichita, West Texas, Drake, Texas Tech and Nevada –– 170 to 7 points … Tulsa’s first-ever game against a Big Ten opponent came a week later against the nation’s 8th-ranked Indiana Hoosiers, but it resulted in a 7-2 loss at Hoosier Stadium to the eventual Big Ten Champion … Tulsa took an early 6-0 lead, vs. No. 11 Oklahoma A&M, but the Aggies rallied for a 12-6 victory at Stillwater’s Lewis Stadium. Tulsa closed out the regular season with wins over Baylor, Arkansas and the Hondo Air Base … Tulsa received an invitation to the Oil Bowl in Houston, Texas. Although the Hurricane suffered a 20-6 loss against the 18th-ranked Georgia Bulldogs, the bowl game was the fifth straight for Tulsa on New Year’s Day, the most for any school at the time … Tulsa finished the season with an 8-3 record, and out-scored the opposition 269 to 64 in the fifth and final season under Head Coach Henry Frnka … the 1945 season capped a five-year stretch that saw Tulsa win three Missouri Valley Conference Championships, post 40 wins, and just nine losses and one tie.
