By setting virtually all the NCAA passing records in 1963 and `64, he secured his reputation as a superb passer. Was selected as an All-America quarterback by United Press International and Football Writers Association, and was the Heisman Trophy runner-up in 1964. Threw for 4,779 yards and 42 touchdowns in his career. As a senior, he passed for 2,870 yards and 32 TDs, while throwing 198 passes without an interception that season. Led the Golden Hurricane to a victory over Mississippi in the Bluebonnet Bowl. Was voted Associated Press Back of the Year his senior season. Had his jersey No. 17 retired.
