Won back-to-back Missouri Valley Conference championships, the first ever in school history came in 1961, coached by Ted Ballard … Tulsa recorded 56.3 points in 1961 for the victory after placing in 8th and last place with 18.5 points in the 1960 season … sprinter Bill Brown was the meet’s top point-getter winning the 220-yard dash, placing 3rd in the 100 and running legs of TU’s winning 440 relay team and runner-up mile relay … the 1961 championship came down to the pole vault between Tulsa sophomore David Smoot and the Drake pole vaulter, as the winner would give his team the title, Smoot won… in 1962, Tulsa scored in 13 different events to pull off the upset … Bob Newell captured gold medals for the 120-yard high hurdles in a time of 14.8 seconds and the 200-yard low hurdles in 26.4. David Smoot repeated as the pole vault champion with a new MVC record … Tulsa managed 63.5 points to hold off Drake with 56.5 points.
