Francis Schmidt was one of the early pioneers who helped develop the tradition that characterized Golden Hurricane football … was a lawyer who began coaching football as an assistant coach to Sam McBirney for the 1915 and ’16 seasons … became head coach of the Henry Kendall College football team in 1919 and compiled a 24-3-1 record in three seasons … had undefeated teams in 1919, 8-0-1; and in 1920 with a 10-0-1 record … the 1919 Kendall team amassed 66 points per game, and the 1920 team averaged 57 points … beginning in 1915, he served as the school's basketball coach for six seasons.
