Howard Waugh was a powerful runner who rushed for 2,597 yards and 18 touchdowns during his collegiate career … led the nation in rushing yards in the 1952 season with 1,372 yards for an NCAA-high average of 8.4 yards per carry, rushing for 300 yards more than that year’s Heisman Trophy winner Billy vessels of Oklahoma … rushed for 1,118 yards for a 6.8 average as a junior in 1951 … was twice named to the All-Missouri Valley Conference teams … in 26 career games, he averaged 7.4 yards per carry and had 10 games rushing for over 100 yards … twice rushed for over 200 yards in a single game, gaining 250 yards vs. Arkansas in 1952 and 216 yards vs. Houston in the 1951 season.
