The University of Tulsa won't have to go far for the Western Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships this year. TU will host the meet on Saturday, October 28 at Mohawk Park, with the women starting a 1 p.m. and the men starting at 2 p.m.
The women will run a 5km race. Sophomore Sarah Haskins (Ballwin, Mo.) has clocked the sixth best time in the conference for a 5,000m race this year with her fourth-place finish and time of 18:24 at the Fayetteville Invitational. Junior Charlotte Sanderson (York, England) currently has the eighth best time in the WAC for this distance. She finished 12th at the OSU Cowboy Jamboree in a time of 18:34.
Last season, Fride Vullum won the individual crown to help lead the Golden Hurricane to a fourth-place finish overall, its best finish as a member of the WAC.
On the men's side, senior Tim Surface (Jefferson City, Mo.) has turned in the fastest time in the WAC for a 8km course. He finished sixth at the Fayetteville Invitational with a career-best time of 20:35. Freshman Justin Rempel (Hesston, Kan.) finished 10th in that same race. His time of 21:44 is the fourth best in the conference this season, while junior Brian Erwin's (Normal, Illinois) time of 21:50 at the Fayetteville Invitational is also the fifth best time in the WAC this season.
At Fresno, Calif., in last season's championship, Surface finished eighth overall to help lead TU to a sixth place finish. The Hurricane had never before finished above seventh at the WAC Championships.
