Tulsa, Oklahoma - Hawaii built a 2-0 lead on back-to-back goals during the first 28 minutes of the game and held on for a 2-1 Western Athletic Conference victory over Tulsa at the Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex.
With the win, Hawaii improves to 4-5 overall and 1-0 in WAC play, while Tulsa falls to 6-5-2 overall and 1-2 in conference games. TU outshot the Rainbow Wahine, 21-12 and held an 8-3 advantage on corner kicks, but UH finished on top of the Hurricane where it counted most, on the scoreboard.
Hawaii jumped on the Hurricane early when Veronica Flores found a streaking Jennifer Starsiak down the right side of the field and Starsiak blasted a shot into the upper left corner of the net to give the Rainbow Wahine a 1-0 lead. Flores picked up the assist on the UH goal.
Less than 18 minutes later Hawaii extended its lead to 2-0 when Carmel Hurley recorded high first collegiate goal after she nailed a shot from the right side of the field into the left side of the net. The Rainbow Wahine led 2-0 at intermission.
Midway through the second half, the Golden Hurricane avoided the shutout and got on the board when freshman Holly Lorman dribbled down the center of the field and lofted a shot from 10 yards out over the head of Hawaii goalkeeper Jennifer Churchill. Now trailing 2-1, TU had several chances to score, but clutch saves by Churchill combined with missed opportunities negated any chance of a Tulsa comeback.
