TU Men's Tennis Team Splits East Coast Matches

Junior Dane McGregor remained perfect in singles this spring with wins at North Carolina and VCU.

Tulsa, Oklahoma - In two matches this weekend against two of the East Coast's top schools, Tulsa topped 26th-ranked North Carolina, 5-2, in Chapel Hill but dropped a narrow 4-3 decision to Virginia Commonwealth in Richmond.

With the split, the 38th-ranked Hurricane now boasts a 6-3 overall record.

In the first match of the weekend, Tulsa captured the doubles point with victories at the top and bottom slots. The junior combination of Dane McGregor and Shri Sudhakara downed UNC's top tandem of Marcio Petrone and Nicholas Monroe, 8-6. The Tar Heels returned the favor with an 8-6 win at the No. 2 doubles spot, but TU's senior Micah Zomer and Mike Nammar breezed past Greg Archer and Aron Breziner, 8-1.

In singles, North Carolina won the No. 1 and No. 3 positions, but Dane McGregor held his own with a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 triumph over David Cheatwood at the second singles spot. The Golden Hurricane swept the remainder of the lineup to clinch the victory. Freshman Alejandro Tejerina, Zomer and junior Sean Monk all claimed wins in TU's lower portion of the lineup.

A day later in Richmond, Va., Virginia Commonwealth began its match with Tulsa by sweeping all three doubles contests.

Tulsa rallied in singles with McGregor, Sudhakara and Monk each posting wins, but VCU also captured three wins to slide past the Hurricane, 4-3.

With his victory over Frank Moser at the second singles slot, McGregor remained perfect in dual matches this season and improved his mark to 13-4 overall and 9-0 during the 2001 spring campaign.
