Tulsa, Oklahoma - The Tulsa men's tennis team past its first major test of the season against a nationally-ranked opponent as the Hurricane won three singles matches and captured the doubles point to post a 4-3 upset against #21 Washington at the Tulsa Southern tennis Club on Friday.
With the win, Tulsa improves to a perfect 3-0 on the season and is now 1-0 against the nation's top-75 teams, while Washington falls to 3-2 overall this season. Tulsa Head Coach Vince Westbrook was obviously pleased with the Hurricane's performance, but praised the Huskies as one of the top teams in the country.
"Washington is one of the hottest teams in the nation right now," Westbrook said. "They barely lost to Stanford and I thought they played well today. But I think the key for us was the effort our young players gave us today. They played extremely well. It's a big boost of confidence for our team heading into our next match against San Diego State. This is definitely a great way to begin the season."
Tulsa took a 1-0 lead after capturing the doubles point at the No. 1 and 3 spots. Juniors Dane McGregor and Shri Sudhakara topped UW's Jeremy Berman and Andy Posavac, 8-6, at the top doubles position. The Huskies won the No. 2 doubles match as Dillon Ruby and Ari Strasberg narrowly got past sophomore Steve Timperley and junior Pawel Sebastyanski, 9-8. At the third position, a pair of former Jenks High School stars ran past Washington's Andrej Bizjak and Matt Hanlin, 8-3.
After a brief intermission, the teams split up and began singles play. Hanlin eased past Sebastyanski, 6-3, 6-2, at the top singles spot, while McGregor returned the favor against Bizjak, 7-5, 6-2, at the second position.
At the third singles spot, Posavac recorded a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Sudhakara. Washington took a brief 3-2 lead when Berman slipped past TU freshman Alejandro Tejerina, 4-6, 6-4, 6-0. But the lead was short-lived as Tulsa rallied behind Zomer and junior Sean Monk at the bottom of the lineup. Zomer dispersed of Strasberg, 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 5 position, while Monk won a three-set match against Marius Lunde, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, at the No. 6 spot.
