McGuire Named to Verizon Academic All-District Softball Team

Sophomore Brandi McGuire was named to the Academic All-District VI Team.

Denton, Texas - Eleven student-athletes, representing nine diffent schools were selected to the 2001 Verizon Academic All-District Women's Softball Team for District VI.

Amanda Kirk of the University of Texas at Arlinton, Lindsay Price and jamie Cummings of the University of Mississippi, Ryan Stukel and naomi Fitzgerald of Baylor, Melissa Briggs of New Mexico State, Miranda Knight of Louisiana Tech, Kristie Martin of the University of Southern Mississippi, Brandi McGuire of the University of Tulsa, Tiffany Wooley of the University of Arkansas and Monica Briggs of the University of Texas-San Antonio were named to the team.

All of these student-athletes will represent District VI on the Verizon Academic All-America national ballot. District VI is comprised of schools from the stats of Arkansas, Louisina, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.

To be eligible for the team, student-athletes must be a starter or front line reserve and must have at least a 3.20 overall grade point average. The team is selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America from District VI. The Verizon Academic All-America Team for Women's softball will be announced Thursday, June 7.

McGuire has played in 53 of TU's 55 games this season, mostly at first base. She was moved to second base late in the season due to injuries at other positions. McGuire currently leads the team in batting average (.285), doubles (11), on-base percentage (.331) and put-outs (262). She is second in slugging percentage (.403) and third in RBIs (13) and hits (41).
