Tulsa Earns Win, Draw To Open 2001 Season:
Tulsa opened the 2001 campaign last weekend at the Vermont Diadora Classic in Burlington, Vt.
In the first game of the season against New Hampshire, senior Melissa McCormick (Omaha, Neb.) scored both of TU's goals, while classmate Beth Taruscio (Tulsa, Okla.) collected one assist. But UNH also managed two goals and the teams settled for a 2-2 draw.
Tulsa's second game of the classic came against tournament host Vermont. The two teams traded blows until the 82nd minute when sophomore Staci Morgan (Owasso, Okla.) blasted a shot past the Vermont goalkeeper for the game-winning goal.
TU's McCormick, Taruscio Named to All-Tournament Team:
Tulsa's senior tandem of Melissa McCormick and Beth Taruscio were each selected to the 2001 Vermont Diadora Classic all-tournament team. McCormick also received the tournament offensive player award despite playing in just one game.
Fahrig Getting Crash Course in Collegiate Goalkeeping:
Tulsa freshman Abby Fahrig (St. Charles, Mo.) probably didn't expect to be named the starting goalkeeper in TU's season opener, but the 5-foot, 9-inch frosh earned the starting nod in both of TU's first two games and came away without a loss. In two matches, Fahrig played 201:00 minutes, allowed just two goals and collected 19 saves for a 0.90 goals-against-average. She closed out the two opening games of the season with her first collegiate shutout against Vermont. She also was credited with a career-high 11 saves against the Catamounts. Her 19 saves in two games last week was tops among Western Athletic Conference goalkeepers.
Four TU Frosh Earn Starting Spots:
A total of four freshmen received their first college starts last weekend at the Vermont Diadora Classic. Alexis Arment (Columbia, Mo.), Abby Fahrig, Monica Karriker (Norman, Okla.) and Holly Lorman (Saskatoon, Canada), each started the first two games of the season.
McCormick Closing in on TU's Career Assists Record:
Senior forward Melissa McCormick enters her senior season needing just seven assists to become the school's career assists leader. For her career, she has posted 20 goals and 13 assists for 53 points. The 20 goals are ninth all-time, the 13 assists ranks eighth on TU's list for career assists, while her 53 career points is the 10th-best total in school history. Last season, McCormick shattered the school's single-season assists record with nine assists.
Player Notes:
Beth Taruscio's assist against new Hampshire was the10th of her career, which moved her into 12th-place among the school's career assists leaders.
Sophomore Pam Devore (Derby, Kan.) suffered a knee injury just nine minutes into the second half against New Hampshire in the season opener. Devore tore her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her left leg and will miss the remainder of the season. As a freshman, Devore started all 20 games and recorded 109 saves, the second most among TU's single-season leaders.
