Tulsa Opens WAC Play Against San Jose State, Fresno State:
This week, Tulsa (3-5-1) opens the 2002 Western Athletic Conference campaign at home against San Jose State (2-7-1) and Fresno State (1-9).
On Friday, Oct. 4, at 5:30 p.m., TU hosts San Jose State in the season opener for both teams. The Spartans lead the all-time series with the Golden Hurricane, 3-1.
This Sunday, Oct. 6, Tulsa continues WAC play against Fresno State at 12 noon. The Bulldogs hold a 3-2 advantage on the Hurricane in the overall series.
TU Blanks Drury; Drops Heartbreaker to SMS:
Tulsa completed last week with a 1-1 finish at the 2002 Golden Hurricane Classic.
Against Drury, freshman Danielle Fauteux (Kamloops, B.C., Canada) turned a hat trick with three goals and led the Golden Hurricane to a 4-0 victory in TU's first game of the Golden Hurricane Classic. Freshman Jamie German (Owasso, Okla.) posted TU's other goal on a penalty kick in the first half.
Fauteux put TU on the board with her score at the 8:13 minute mark off an assist from junior Keely Flynn (Tulsa, Okla.). With Tulsa up 2-0, Fauteux struck again in the first half with a shot over the keepers head at 21:51 and put Tulsa up 3-0. In the second half, Fauteux notched her second career hat trick with her third goal of the game at 67:04 off an assist from senior Julie Twellman (Columbia, Mo.).
On Sunday, Tulsa outshot Southwest Missouri State, 29-8, but dropped a tough 1-0 overtime decision to the Bears.
Fauteux Named WAC Player of the Week:
Tulsa forward Danielle Fauteux has been named the WAC women's soccer Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 23-29.
Last week, Fauteux recorded her second hat trick of the season, scoring three goals in a 4-0 win over Drury. It was her second hat trick in the past three games. She, along with teammate Carrie Schnarre (Lake St. Louis, Mo.) were named to the Golden Hurricane Classic all-Tournament team.
Fauteux Joins TU's Elite group With Hat Trick:
With three-goal performances against Arkansas-Little Rock and Drury, freshman Danielle Fauteux placed her name among a very elite group of Tulsa players. In the 16 year history of the TU women's soccer program, only three players have ever turned more than one hat trick in the same season. Fauteux became the fourth player with her performances against UALR and Drury. She joined former Golden Hurricane standouts Shari Rozmus (1988-91), Janette Javet (1990-93) and Jenny Simms (1993-96) as the only TU players recording two or more hat tricks in one season. Rozmus was the first with two three-goal games in 1988, while Javet tallied a three-goal and a five-goal game in 1990. Simms holds the school record with three hat tricks in 1995.
Twellman Continues To Climb TU Charts:
Senior Julie Twellman climbed one step higher on the school's career charts last week with her assist against Drury. Twellman's assist was the 14th of her career and she moved into an seventh-place tie with Paige Mayer (1994-98) and Kelly Noonan (1997-2000) for career assists. Twellman's point gave her 60 for her career and tied her with Mayer for eighth-place on the school's career scoring chart. Twellman also has 23 career goals, which ties her for eighth-place with Mayer.
German Moving Toward TU's Single-Season Assist Record:
At the halfway point of the 2002 season, freshman Jamie German has established herself as the team's assists leader. German leads TU with five assists in nine games and also has two goals for nine points, which is the second-most points on the team this season. With nine regular season games remaining, German has a good start on catching former Hurricane standout Melissa McCormick's (1998-2001) school single-season assist record of nine in 2000. Currently, German is just two assists shy of becoming the eighth player in school history to record seven assists in a single-season.
TU Frosh Fauteux, German Carrying Golden Hurricane:
Through nine games this season, Tulsa is led in scoring by the freshman duo of Danielle Fauteux and Jamie German. Fauteux leads the team in goals and scoring with seven goals and two assists for 16 points, while German is the team's top assist leader with five and also has two goals for nine points, which ranks second. Together, these two newcomers have combined to score nine of TU's 14 goals and collected seven of the team's 12 assists for a total of 25 of Tulsa's 40 points. Both players have earned the starting nod in every game this season.
Player Notes:
Tulsa's goalkeeper tandem of freshman Kelly Wilson (Highland Village, Texas) and sophomore Abby Fahrig (St. Charles, Mo.) not only combined for a shared shutout against Drury, but recorded TU's first shutout this season as well.
Although she has only played in four games this season, Abby Fahrig has grabbed seven saves to increase her career total to 123, which ranks fourth on TU's career saves chart. Last season, Fahrig started every game and collected 117 saves, the second-most in school history in a single season.
Team Notes:
After this weekend's two home games Tulsa will have just two home contests remaining on the 2002 schedule, including Western Athletic Conference dates against SMU (10/25) and UTEP on Oct. 27.
