STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's softball team shutout Tulsa this afternoon, 8-0, in its first regular season game at Cowgirl Stadium. OSU scored eight runs off 11 hits, including five extra-base hits.
Junior Lauren Bay improved her record to 6-1 on the mound and threw her first perfect game as a Cowgirl. In five innings of play, Bay faced the minimum 15 batters and recorded nine strikeouts. The left-handed hurler has recorded 67 strikeouts on the year and is averaging 9.57 per game.
The beginning of the game looked as if it would be a pitcher's battle, as no batters reached base until Stephanie Hodges walked in the bottom of the second with one out. Jade Lindly followed with a two-run dinger to put the Cowgirls up 2-0 after two innings of play.
With two outs in the third, the Cowgirls had back-to-back doubles to the center-field fence. Ryan Realmuto hit the first long ball and Hodges followed with the second to score Realmuto.
Calli Behmer led off the fourth inning with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice hit by Teresa Ritchie. Casey O'Neill had a base hit to knock Behmer home and give the Cowgirls a 4-0 advantage.
The Cowgirl bats stayed hot as Jenny Kipp collected a base hit and then stole second to get in scoring position. Designated player, Megan Carey played her role well, hitting a two-run home run for the final runs scored in the inning, giving OSU a 7-0 lead over the Golden Hurricane.
In the fifth inning, the Cowgirls scored a run, halting the game after five innings due to the mercy rule. Ritchie reached base on a line drive to center field and advanced to second on a sacrifice hit by O'Neill. Ritchie later crossed the plate with the game-ending run on a wild pitch by Tulsa's, Amy VanHuss.
The Golden Hurricane return to action on Saturday afternoon, as they play their first home game on the TU campus in the nine-year history of the program. Tulsa will host the Lady Warriors of Bacone College for a doubleheaderm, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex. The new softball field is located at the corner of 6th and Columbia on the west side of the TU campus.
