Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa men's cross country team started the 2002 season out on the right foot Satuday morning, literally and figuratively, at the Hurricane Cross Country Festival in Mohawk Park. The Golden Hurricane outdueled the Bears of Southwest Missouri State to win the team title for the second consecutive year. The TU women also dueled with SMS for the team crown, however the Bears won that battle by placing eight of the top 10 runners.

On the men's side TU's Andy Norman claimed the individual crown with a time of 19:44. He defeated teammate Owain Matthews by 16-seconds, as Matthews finished with a time of 20:00. Junior Ben Orozco rounded out the top-five with a fifth-place finish in a time of 20:29. Redshirt Justin Rempel finished sixth, only one second behind Orozco at 20:30. Freshman Taylor Williams finished eighth in his first collegiate race with a time of 20:35; while TU's Jared Christianson closed out the top-10 in 10th with a time of 20:47. Senior Brian Erwin finished 13th with a time of 21:19, while Derek Sparks finished 20th with a time of 23:13.

SMS finished second with 34 points, earning four top-10 finishes. ORU finished thrid with 90 points.

For the women, the Bears' Rebechah Daro opened a nice lead coming out of the wooded section toward the end of the first mile and never looked back. She finished first, with a time of 11:06, just ahead of fellow SMS runners Casey Owens (11:16), Erin Sutton (11:17) and Rebecca Kuklenski (11:21). The top TU runner was freshman Tami Scott in fifth place with a time of 11:22. TU senior Sarah Haskins finished sixth, only two seconds behind Scott, with a time of 11:24.

Other TU finishers included Monica Joannes in 12th place with a time of 11:32; Megan Langwell in 13th place with a tim eof 11:36; Natalie Rasmussen in 16th place with a time of 11:50; Erin Deasy in 17th place with a time of 11:56; April Johnson in 19th place with a time of 12:18; and Melanie Hardy in 21st place with a time of 12:21.
