Tulsa Treks to Arkansas; Hosts Portland State This Weekend:
The Tulsa Golden Hurricane (0-2) makes a short trip east to Fayetteville, Ark., this Wednesday to battle the Arkansas Lady Razorbacks at 7:00 p.m. Both TU and Arkansas are 0-2 this season. The Hurricane leads the all-time series with the Lady Razorbacks, 15-4-1, and enters the contest with a four-game unbeaten streak in the series.
On Sunday, September 8, TU hosts Portland State (2-0) at 12 noon in the home-opener for the Golden Hurricane. The contest is a first-time meeting between the two teams.
TU Drops Back-To-Back Games to Oklahoma, Oklahoma State at Oklahoma Shootout:
Tulsa began the season on a sour note, dropping its first two games of the year to Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, respectively, at the 2002 Oklahoma Shootout.
In the season-opener against the Sooners, the Hurricane surrendered one goal in each half to fall 2-0 to OU. Freshman goalkeeper Kelly Wilson (Highland Village, Texas) collected three saves in the loss. The loss to OU marked the first for TU in the three-year event. The Hurricane swept its games in 2000 and 2001 to capture back-to-back tournament titles.
In its second game of the tournament, Oklahoma State scored three straight goals before TU sophomore Holly Lorman (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada) headed in a pass from freshman Jamie German (Owasso, Okla.) during the final 10 minutes of the game.
TU Frosh Logging Major Playing Time:
TU's talented and nationally-ranked freshmen class was thrust into action last weekend in the first two games of the regular season. A total of five freshmen started against Oklahoma and six against Oklahoma State, including goalkeeper Kelly Wilson who finished with eight saves in two games. Several players earned starting assignments in both games including, Danielle Fauteaux (Kamloops, B.C., Canada), Gina Gaston (Norman, Okla.), Jamie German, Ashley Rickner (Broken Arrow, Okla.) and Wilson. Carrie Schnarre (Lake St. Louis, Mo.) came off the bench against OU and received the starting nod vs. OSU, while Kaia Knutson (Fargo, N.D.) saw action against the Cowgirls.
At 0-2, TU in Uncharted Territory:
Tulsa's 0-2 start is the first since the 1991 season and marks just the second time in the 16-year history of the women's soccer program that Tulsa has started the season winless in its first two games. In 1991, the Hurricane rebounded to finish with a 10-6-2 record. Tulsa has never lost three straight games to open the season.
TU's 2002 Recruiting Class Ranked No. 37 Nationally; No. 4 in Central Region:
The University of Tulsa's 2002 recruiting class has been selected as the 37th best group among the 293 NCAA Division I women's soccer teams in the nation and the fourth-ranked class in the 65-team Central Region by Soccer Buzz Magazine.
The Golden Hurricane's eight newcomers finished as the highest-ranked group among Western Athletic Conference schools and ranked behind only perennial powers Nebraska, Texas and Texas A&M, respectively, among Central Region teams. Both the national and regional rankings are the highest the TU women's soccer program has ever received in its 16-year history.
It also marks the third straight season that Tulsa has received high marks. Last season, the 2001 class ranked among the nation's top-100 and the region's top-25 classes. TU's 2000 freshmen class ranked eighth in the region and among the top-100 groups in the country.
Tulsa's 2002 recruiting class of eight true freshmen includes Danielle Fauteux, Gina Gaston, Jamie German, Kaia Knutson, Rachel Lavender (Texarkana, Texas), Ashley Rickner, Carrie Schnarre and Kelly Wilson.
Player Notes:
Kelly Wilson earned her first collegiate start against Oklahoma in the season opener and became the fifth freshmen to open the season in goal for Tulsa. Since 1998, Tulsa has started a freshman as its goalkeeper in the season opener. In 1998, Whitney Forsyth earned the starting assignment, followed by Amanda Wallace in 1999, Pam Devore (Derby, Kan.) in 2000, Abby Fahrig (St. Charles, Mo.) in 2001 and Wilson in 2002.
With her assist against Oklahoma State, freshman Jamie German picked up her first collegiate point.
Team Notes:
Eight of TU's starters against Oklahoma State were freshmen or sophomores. Juniors Katie Schlecht (Derby, Kan.) and Staci Morgan (Owasso, Okla.) were the only juniors, while Liz Benoist (St. Louis, Mo.) was the lone senior in the lineup.
Tulsa will face 2001 NCAA Tournament teams Kansas, Southwest Missouri State and SMU at home in 2002.
