TULSA, Okla. (AP) - Brian Cardwell hit the first two 3-pointers of his career to ignite a 14-1 second-half run, lifting Tulsa to a 78-66 victory over New Mexico State Sunday.
Cardwell, a freshman who spent the past four seasons as a pitcher in minor league baseball, had attempted just one 3-pointer in his career coming into the game.
But Sunday, Cardwell made both of his 3-point attempts and scored another basket with his toe on the arc to score a career-high 10 points.
Jarius Glenn led Tulsa (3-3) with 16 points and eight rebounds.
Jason Parker had 12 points, eight below his average, but five other Golden Hurricane players contributed between 7 and 9 points.
John Duane led New Mexico State (4-2) with 16 points. Detrius Roberson added 14 and James Moore had 10 points and eight rebounds before fouling out.
The Aggies rallied from a 13-point deficit to cut Tulsa's lead to 57-52 with 10:12 left.
Cardwell starting Tulsa's game-clinching run with his high-arching 3-pointer and Glenn followed that up with a basket. The spurt was capped by Charles Ramsdell's three-point play, giving Tulsa a 71-53 lead with 3:57 to play.
Tulsa shot 64 percent in the second half, helping the Golden Hurricane build on its 36-31 halftime lead.
