Hurricane Upsets Cajuns at Mardi Gras Classic

Monroe, La. - The University of Tulsa softball team defeated Louisiana-Lafayette in the first round of the 2003 Mardi Gras Classic in Monroe, La., 2-0 on Friday night in Monroe, La.
Freshman hurler Maren Genow pitched a one-hit shutout in just her third collegiate start, allowing a bunt single in the first inning. She struck out eight batters while walking no one in her seven innings of work.
Five different Hurricane batters recorded hits, including senior Brandi McGuire with two hits. Her two-run single scored fellow senior Danielle Olsen and freshman Katie Torres with the game-winning runs. In addition to McGuire and Torres, senior Crissy Strimple and junior Heather Hiar all recorded doubles as one of their hits.
The Ragin' Cajans entered the contest ranked 29th in the NFCA poll and had defeated WAC foe Louisiana Tech in their previous two games.
