Triple Play Sparks Hawaii Past Golden Hurricane

Honolulu, Hawaii - The University of Hawai`i turned its second triple play of the season in the top of the seventh inning to end the first game of Saturday's Western Athletic Conference doubleheader, to seal a 2-0 victory. The Rainbow Wahine also scored the go ahead run with two outs in the bottom of the sixth for a 2-1 victory in the nightcap.

Hawai`i led off the bottom of sixth with a homerun for a 1-0 Sin the first game. Two outs later, the Wahine scored from second on a single with an insurance run. Not going down with out a fight, freshman Katie Torres led of the top of the seventh with a single to left field. Senior Brandi McGuire followed with a single to right center field. Fellow seniors Danielle Olsen and Ashlea Montgomery pinch ran for Torres and McGuire, respectively. Sophomore Stacey Walkingstick tattooed a ball which was caught by the second baseman, who turned and threw to first, doubling off Montgomery. The first baseman then threw to second, picking off Olsen.

Sophomore Ami Day was saddled with the loss, falling to 12-11 on the season. McGuire led the Hurricane's five hit attack with two of her own. Junior Heather Hiar opened the game with a hit, while sophomore Stephanie Sliepen and Torres also recorded hits.

In the second game, freshman Maren Genow and UH's Shannon Tabion dueled for the first three inning. Each pitcher only gave up one hit apeice in the first three innings. With one out in the fourth inning, Stacey Porter hit a triple down the right field line. She would score a batter later on a sacrifice fly.

Freshman Julie Shafer tied the contest in the top of the sixth inning with her first collegiate homerun. She sent the first pitch of the inning over the left field fence. Hiar followed two pitches later with a single that chased Tabion. Game one starter Melissa Coogan then retired the next two TU batters to end the inning.

The Rainbow Wahine opened the seventh by reaching on a throwing error by the Golden Hurricane, followed by a single. A successful sacrifice bunt, followed by a sacrifice fly to right field scored the game winner for Hawai`i.

Tulsa falls to 29-22 on the season and 4-6 in the WAC. Genow lost for the sixth time this season, against 13 victories. The Golden Hurricane will return to the friendly confines of the Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex on Tuesday. The sixth-ranked Sooners of Oklahoma will travel to the TU campus for a single-game, scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
