Golden Hurricane Defeat Sooners for Second Consecutive Time

Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa softball team picked up a much needed confidence booster on Monday night with a 2-0 victory over No. 13-nationally ranked Oklahoma at the Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex. Sophomore Katie Torres provided the offensive spark for the Golden Hurricane with a homerun and an RBI double.
After setting the Sooners down in order to start the game, Tulsa scored a run in the first inning for the 16th time this season. The Golden Hurricane has scored 42 runs in the first inning this season, compared to only 15 for its opponents. Junior Stacey Walkingstick's infield single with one out got the Hurricane rolling. After working to a full count, Torres sent the Kami Keiter offering to the left center gap. The hit allowed Walkingstick to score from first base.
Junior Heather Scaglione led off the OU second inning with a full count walk for the Sooners' first base runner. Freshman Norrelle Dickson led off the OU third inning with an infield single, however neither runner would make it past second base.
Tulsa sophomore Maren Genow kept the Sooners off balance all night, striking out five Oklahoma hitters and allowing only three hits. The biggest OU threat came in the top of the sixth inning as Kristin Vesely ripped a triple to left field with two outs. After getting ahead in the count with two stikes, Genow worked out of the jam by getting OU's all-region selection Christina Enea to ground out, ending the inning.
Torres got any momentum gained by the Sooners back for the Golden Hurricane with one swing. The Del City, Okla., native hit the first pitch she saw over the left center fence for her 11th homerun of the season. With 18 career homers, Torres needs one more long ball to tie both the single season school record and the career record. Both school marks are currently held by Angela Fuller (1995-98) with 12 home runs during the 1996 season and 19 home runs during her career.
Tulsa finished the contest with eight hits in the contest, as TU out hit its opponent for the 27th time this season. Sophomore Julie Shafer also had three hits for the Hurricane, while fellow sophomore Kelly Miller and freshman Angela Osbon also posted hits for Tulsa.
The Hurricane improves to 30-15 on the season, while OU falls to 28-14-1 on the year. Tulsa returns to Western Athletic Conference play on Thursday with a trip to El Paso, Texas, to play the WAC's newest team in UTEP. Tulsa will conclude the week with another WAC doubleheader, in San Jose, Calif., against the Spartans of San Jose State.
