Tulsa, Oklahoma - The University of Tulsa women's soccer team has been rewarded for its outstanding performance in the classroom during the 2004 campaign with its selection to the National Soccer Coaches Association of American (NSCAA)/adidas Women's College Team Academic Award.

The Golden Hurricane was one of three teams from the Western Athletic Conference to receive the team award, and boasted the second-highest grade-point-average among conference schools with a combined 3.26 GPA from its 24-member squad. Boise State earned the highest GPA among WAC schools with a 3.31, while UTEP was third with a 3.14.

Among TU's academic performers was sophomore Katie Ward, who earned CoSida Academic All-District VI University Division Women's Soccer Second Team honors in 2004. Ward has maintained a perfect 4.00 GPA in petroleum engineering.

Tulsa concluded its first season under Head Coach Rena Richardson with a 7-10-4 overall record, but more importantly turned in a fifth-place finish in conference play after the Hurricane was picked to finish seven in the WAC preseason coaches poll. Tulsa shocked fourth-seeded Hawaii in the first round of the 2004 WAC Tournament and then dropped a hard-fought, 1-0, decision to top-seeded and eventual champion SMU in the semifinal round.
