Rice Tops Hurricane 41-38 in Overtime

Tulsa, Okla. -- Tulsa suffered four turnovers in a 41-38 overtime loss against the Rice Owls on Saturday afternoon in front of 18,632 fans at Skelly Stadium. Rice's Chase Clement connected on a 25-yard touchdown pass with Jarett Dillard in the corner of the end zone in the second overtime to give the Owls the victory.
Trailing 20-7 at the end of three quarters, Tulsa running back Courtney Tennial scored two touchdowns to give the Hurricane a 21-20 lead. Rice scored from 21 yards out after a fumbled kick return to retake the lead 28-21, but Paul Smith marched the Hurricane offense 86 yards in six plays and ran in from three yards out with 1:19 remaining on the game clock to knot the score at 28.
The overtime period began with Rice scoring on an 11-yard pass from Chase Clement to Jarett Dillard. Paul Smith's one-yard run on fourth down and the PAT conversion tied the score at 35. In the second overtime period Tulsa had to settle for a 29-yard Jarod Tracy field goal, and then Rice connected on a 3rd-and-10 play for the winning touchdown.
Tulsa fell to 7-3 on the season and 4-2 in league play, while Rice improved to 5-5 and 4-2 in Conference USA action.
After Tulsa opened the game with a touchdown drive, Rice scored 20 unanswered points in the first half.
It was a game that saw the Hurricane out-gain the Owls 568 to 356 yards, but suffered a season-high four turnovers in the game, including three in Rice territory. Tulsa lost its most turnovers since suffering six turnovers against Louisiana Tech on Nov. 13, 2004.
Tulsa's Smith completed 17-of-29 passes for a career-high 308 yards, while the Hurricane had two running backs over 100 yards rushing for the first time since 2000, as Tarrion Adams had 116 yards and Tennial gained 109 yards. Senior receiver Ryan Bugg had a carer-best 145 yards on seven receptions.
Tulsa out-gained the Owls 322 to 81 yards in the final two 15-minute quarters. The Tulsa defense held the Owls to five total yards in the third quarter, while the Hurricane gained 141 yards in the third period. In the fourth quarter, Tulsa out-gained Rice 181-76 yards.
The Hurricane scored 14 points in the fourth quarter and went ahead 21-20 for the first time after a 7-0 opening drive when Tennial ran for his third touchdown of the game, capping an 80-yard, seven-play drive with 7:26 remaining in the game.
Tulsa ended its two-quarter scoring drought on a three-yard Tennial run at the 14:35 mark of the fourth quarter. The run capped a nine-play, 45-yard drive for the Hurricane.
Earlier in the half, Tulsa took their first second-half possession from their own 19-yard line to the Rice one-yard line, but Paul Smith's 10-yard pass to Ted Curtis was fumbled at the one-yard line and recovered by the Owls in the end zone.
In the first half, the Owls scored 20 unanswered points and held a 20-7 halftime lead in an error-filled half for the Golden Hurricane. Tulsa suffered two first-half turnovers, a blocked punt, and was called for pass interference on a 4th and 15 from the Tulsa-34-yard line in the first half.
Tulsa took the opening kickoff 59 yards in seven plays, as Smith hit Tennial on a screen pass that went 34 yards for the Hurricane score.
Two first quarter miscues, an interception and fumble recovery by Rice's Chad Price, stopped Tulsa drives at the Owls' 27 and 49-yard lines. On the pick-off it appeared that Tulsa's Donnie Johnson would make a tough catch, but couldn't control the ball as it rolled around to his back and taken away by Price.
The Owls took the first takeaway 73 yards in five plays as Quinton Smith ran the final 10 yards to knot the score at 7-7.
After a blocked punt, Rice went 23 yards in six plays and settled for a 29-yard field goal by Clark Fangmeier to go ahead 10-7 at the 9:56 mark of the second quarter.
In the final five minutes of the second quarter, Rice added 10 more points. First, a 29-field goal by Clark Fangmeier at the 4:14 mark of the second quarter, as the three-pointer capped a 12-play, 54-yard drive. The second came on a 65-yard pass completion from Chase Clement to Jarett Dillard with 0:57 remaining before halftime.
Rice out-gained the Hurricane 122 to 75 in the second quarter, while out-scoring the Hurricane 13-0. Tulsa's 13-point deficit at halftime was the largest since the 2005 season opener, a 21-point deficit to Minnesota.
