Tulsa Handles Lamar 78-64

Tulsa, Oklahoma - Tulsa is off to its best start since the 2002-03 season as the Hurricane improved to 5-1 on the season with a 78-64 victory over Lamar at the Donald W. Reynolds Center on Friday night. The Hurricane posted the double-digit victory behind Calvin Walls' first career double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds, while senior Darold Crow added 11 points and freshman Ben Uzoh 10 points.
Tulsa's 14-point win was the fourth time this season that the Hurricane has posted a double-digit victory. Tulsa out-rebounded Lamar by 27 rebounds, 58 to 31, but the Cardinals knocked down 12 three-pointers in 37 attempts from the field.
Despite the 12 three-pointers by the Cardinals, the Hurricane held Lamar to 38.1 percent shooting from the field, while the Cardinals also connected on just 36.4 percent of its free throws.
Tulsa opened the second half with a 14-5 run in the first five minutes, and extended that to a 19-7 run at the 11:45 media timeout. Uzoh knocked down his first two three-pointers in the second half pushing the Hurricane lead to eight points 45-37.
Mark Hill's three-pointer at 15:12 made it 48-37, then his second consecutive three pointer gave the Hurricane a 51-39 lead. Tulsa increased its lead to 20 points, 64-44, on a Jerome Jordan running dunk from a Brett McDade assist at the 8:34 mark. From that point Tulsa, saw its lead stay in double digits, and led by as many as 21 points with 3:51 left in the contest after senior Charles Ramsdell knocked down a jumper.
Tulsa held a two-point lead at halftime, 34-32 behind 10 points from Walls and seven from Crow. The first half saw the Hurricane build its biggest lead to 12 points, but Lamar kept on hitting three-pointers and cut it to a two-point halftime lead for the Hurricane.
Lamar scored the first five points of the game, but Tulsa responded with the next 12 points, before Matthew Barrow hit a three-pointer at the 14:45 mark to snap Tulsa's 12-0 run.
McDade's three-pointer pushed the Tulsa lead to a first-half high of 12 points, 28-16, at the 7:40 mark. After a layup by Lamar Sanders, Barrow knocked down two straight three-pointers, cutting the Hurricane lead to four points, 28-24.
Tulsa shot just 14-percent from three-point range in the first half, while the Cardinals connected on 8-of-20 treys for a .400 percentage from behind the three-point line. Tulsa did shoot 40 percent overall from the field in the first half, compared to Lamar's 38-percent. The Hurricane out-rebounded Lamar by a 27-14 count before intermission.
Tulsa is back in action against Jackson State on Monday night at the Reynolds Center. Tip-off is 7:05 pm.
