Tulsa, Oklahoma - Senior forward Darold Crow scored a career-high 27 points in 20 minutes as Tulsa defeated Southern Arkansas 88-56 on Sunday afternoon in front of a crowd of 5,058 fans at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
Crow connected on 14-of-14 shots from the field, including 3-of-4 from three-point range and added five rebounds, three blocked shots and two points.
The Hurricane improved to 7-1 on the season, while SAU dropped to 3-5,
"It was great to see Darold play the way he did and go 12-of-14 from the field. He really stepped up. I thought everybody was into the game. There were times we faded in and out," said Wojcik. "But, relatively speaking, I was pleased with the outcome and the performance."
As a team, the Hurricane shot a season-high 60.3 percent from the field, including 43.8 percent from three-point range. SAU shot 47.6-percent from three-point range, but only 31-percent for their two-point attempts for the game.
Wojcik was pleased with the season-low eight turnovers by his team. "I think the best thing that we can say about the game and playing that type of pace was we had just eight turnovers," added Wojcik. The eight turnovers was the lowest since Tulsa turned the ball over only six times against UTEP on February 15, 2003.
Rod Earls and Sam Mitchell each added 11 points for the Hurricane. Tulsa had a double-digit advantage in rebounding, 38 to 24, for the third straight game and for the fifth time this season.
The Muleriders got as close as nine points in the second half, 53-44, but Tulsa scored the next nine points and finished out the half on a 35-12 run. Crow scored 18 points during that stretch for the Hurricane.
The Hurricane held an 11-point lead at halftime, 39-28, behind Crow's nine first-half points, as he connected on 4-of-5 field goals in nine minutes of play.
Tulsa jumped out to a 13-3 lead, until Cory Green knocked down a three-pointer at the 14:20 mark of the first half. The Hurricane then rattled off nine straight points. Crow's three-pointer from the top of the key gave the Hurricane 22-6 lead near the midway point of the first half at the 10:32 mark.
Tulsa built its biggest first-half lead to 18 points, 26-8, with 9:00 left before halftime, but Southern Arkansas would not quit.
SAU wouldn't let the game get away as the Muleriders shot 62-percent from beyond three-point range, sinking 8-of-13 first-half treys. The Muleriders out-scored the Hurricane 20-13 over the final nine minutes, getting as close as 10 points with 0:21 remaining before intermission.
Tulsa is back in action against Prairie View A&M next Saturday at the Reynolds Center. Tip-off is 6:05 pm. The Tulsa women will play Arkansas following the men's game.
