Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa softball team improved to 6-2 on the season with a pair of 7-0 victories to conclude the first day of action at the Holiday Inn Select-Tulsa Festival. The tournament not only began the home schedule for TU, it also opens an 11-game homestand at the Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex for the Golden Hurricane.
In its first game of the day, TU rode the arm of senior Maren Genow to defeat Eastern Illinos. The Moore, Okla., native struck out 10 EIU batters while scattering four hits in the complete game victory.
The Hurricane also did the job offensively as seven TU hitters recorded at least one hit. Junior Lindsay Galloway led the charge with three hits, including a double. Seniors Katie Torres and Julie Shafer, along with sophomore Lindsay Tower, also recorded two hits apiece.
Tulsa broke open a scoreless game with four runs in the second, then added another run in the fifth and two more in the sixth. The Golden Hurricane tied the school record for stolen bases in a single game with six. Junior Kelli McGlasson and Galloway had six apiece.
In the night cap, Tulsa again posted four runs in the second. A three-run home run by Torres helped the Hurricane cause in the second inning. TU added two more runs in the third inning when freshman Brooke Smart earned a bases-loaded walk followed by a single from Shafer to score another run. Tulsa scored an insurance run in the fifth with a solo homer by senior LeeAnne Pepper.
