Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa softball team recorded 10 hits offensively, turned a double-play defensively while pitching a four-hitter to earn its first run-rule victory of the season with a 9-1 victory over Memphis on Sunday. A crowd of 137 witnessed TU sweep its second conference series of the season at the Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex.
TU scored in the first inning for the 12th time this season, with a pair of run in the bottom of the opening inning. Freshman Brooke Smart opened the TU half with a walk. After she stole second, Smart advanced to third on a single by senior Katie Torres. Sophomore Sara Dyer doubled home Smart and Torres for the first two runs.
The Hurricane posted a single run in the second inning, as junior Angela Osbon led off with a single. After a fielder's choice by senior Kelly Miller, junior Lindsay Galloway was TU's third consecutive base runner with a single through the left side. A bloop single to right field by Smart loaded the bases with one down. Miller would score on a sacrifice fly by senior Julie Shafer.
Memphis cut into TU's lead with a run in the third inning. Junior Cara Stiles walked with two outs, then scored from first on a double down the line by Leila Dolfo.
Tulsa quickly padded its lead by hanging a three-spot in the third. TU again had three consecutive runners as Dyer opened the stanza with a walk. A fielder's choice by junior Kelli McGlasson was followed by another walk from freshman Jessica Barr. Sophomore Lindsey Tower pinch ran for Barr prior to junior Angela Osbon earning a walk to load the bases. A single by Galloway cleared the bases, as McGlasson and Barr scored on the hit. The throw from the outfield sailed into the TU dugout, allowing Torres to score as well, for a 6-1 TU lead.
Junior Julie Fennell allowed singles in the fourth and the fifth, however one runner was turned away on a 4-6-3 double play, keeping the TU lead. In the bottom of the sixth, Galloway led off with a single up the middle, followed by a walk from Smart. With one out, Torres belted her seventh home run of the season over the left centerfield fence, ending the contest.
Fennell improves to 8-4 on the season, winning back-to-back contests for the first time this season. TU improved to 21-10 overall, 8-1 in league play. Memphis fell to 17-14 overall, 3-5 in C-USA games. Galloway was 3-for-3 on the day, including a run scored and a stolen base. Torres also recorded a trio of hits, including the homer. She scored two runs to go along with three RBIs. Osbon was also perfect from the plate, going 2-for-2 with a walk.
Tulsa returns to action on Wednesday, March 29, to host The Border War. TU, Arkansas and Oklahoma State will play a round-robin event beginning at 3 p.m. at the Hardesty Complex.
